MTN Nigeria Reverses 200% Data Tariff Increase, Begs subscribers
In a surprise move, MTN Nigeria has reversed its recent 200% tariff hike on its 15G data plan, just two days after implementing the increase. The company announced the reversal in a statement on its official X account on Thursday.The initial tariff hike, which was implemented on Tuesday, had sparked widespread outrage and contravened the 50% telecom tariff hike approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission.In a statement, MTN Nigeria apologized to its customers for the mistake, saying “we get it and admit it. Let’s just say na mistake.” The company urged its customers to forgive and forget, emphasizing that they matter and that MTN values their loyalty.
The reversal comes after the Nigeria Labour Congress called for a boycott of telcos’ services in protest of the tariff hike. MTN Nigeria had initially implemented the 50% tariff hike approved by the NCC, but the additional 200% hike on the 15G data plan had gone beyond the approved increase.
The company’s decision to reverse the tariff hike is seen as a move to placate its customers and avoid further backlash.
