Police Officer Arrested for Alleged Gang Activities in Edo State

A serving police officer has been uncovered as a key member of a deadly criminal gang that allegedly terrorized residents of Benin City in Edo State. The officer, along with three other civilians, is accused of engaging in nefarious activities that instilled fear in the community. Authorities are investigating the matter, and the suspects will face justice.

The Edo State Police Command has taken decisive action against a rogue Police Inspector and associates involved in a string of crimes, including brutality, extortion, and armed robbery. Currently in custody, the suspects are facing intense questioning regarding their alleged actions.

CSP Moses Yamu, the Police Public Relations Officer for Edo State, confirmed the arrest, which was prompted by a widely circulated video. In the footage, a victim recounts being abducted, having his belongings seized, and enduring harassment and intimidation at the hands of certain police officers.

Following this report, State Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika swiftly initiated an investigation and ordered the arrest of those responsible. The Ugbowo Surveillance Team successfully apprehended the suspects, seizing a silver Toyota Yaris and various incriminating items during the operation on August 15, 2025.

The suspects, including the serving Police Inspector and three civilian accomplices, are accused of terrorizing city residents through extortionate practices and harassment. CSP Yamu emphasized the Command's zero-tolerance stance on corruption and misconduct, quoting CP Agbonika's firm assertion that any officer implicated in such wrongdoing would face the full weight of the law, including potential dismissal, arrest, and prosecution.

The Police Command encourages anyone with information, particularly the victim from the viral video, to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation to ensure justice is served. Reaffirming the Command's commitment to protecting lives and property, restoring public trust, and upholding the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force, CSP Yamu stated that the suspects will face court proceedings once the investigation is concluded.
