Crimewatchnewspaper reports that the suspect, Barrister Emmanuel of Jahi in FCT, Abuja, has been arrested and charged for criminal breach of trust, assault, causing harm, and instigating unrest.
The prosecuting counsel, Olisaemeka Okeke, told the Court on Wednesday that the complainant, Queeneth John, a sex worker in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, reported to the Asokoro Police Station on 12th March, 2024. And she claimed that on 11th March,2024, at 10pm, the lawyer, Emmanuel, approached her while she sampled herself in Wuse. He took her to Banex Plaza and promised to pay her a certain amount of money for sex romp and she accepted.
However, she narrated that when everything was over, he did not give her the money as promised, which led to exchange of words between them.
The prosecutor, Okeke, told the Court that during the exchange of words, the defendant assaulted the plaintiff, resulting in bruises all over her body, an offence which contravened Sections 312, 365, 244, and 114 of the Penal Code.
He pleaded not guilty.
The presiding judge, Aliyu Kagarko, granted Emmanuel bail in the sum of N1m with one surety in like sum.
“I hereby grant the defendant bail in line with Section 165 (2) of Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015 to deposit 10 percent of the bail sum at the Court Registry pending the determination of the case” the judge ruled.
The Court ordered that the surety must be a legal practitioner with at least five years of experience, hold a valid call to bar certificate, and reside within the Court’s jurisdiction.
The matter was adjourned till 18th April, 2024, for mention while the defendant was remanded in custody pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.
