The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) confirmed the arrest of 37 internet fraud suspects in Anambra State on January 17, 2025, before one of its officers was tragically killed. The victim, Assistant Superintendent Aminu Sahabi Salisu, was shot dead by a suspected fraudster, Dr. Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, during a legitimate operation in Awka.
In a statement, the EFCC expressed deep sorrow over Salisu’s death and clarified the details of the incident. The operation, which was conducted according to standard protocols, initially went smoothly with the suspects detained at a two-story building. However, when Ikechukwu, who had been monitoring the operation via CCTV, refused to open his door and fired at the officers, Salisu was killed and another officer was wounded.
EFCC investigations revealed that Ikechukwu was a suspected internet fraudster involved in dubious online activities. Two laptops, iPads, and other devices were recovered from his apartment. The commission vowed to pursue justice for Salisu and prosecute Ikechukwu despite his current police custody.
The EFCC also issued a warning to the public about the increasing dangers posed by internet fraudsters, who are reportedly linked to violent crimes like kidnapping and ritual killings. It condemned false narratives circulating on social media about the incident, stressing that there is no excuse for such violent acts against its officers
In conclusion, the EFCC made it clear that any further attacks on its staff would be met with full legal action.
