The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has explained the reason behind the arrest of popular social media activist Martins Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM). The Commission made this known in a statement posted on its official social media platforms on Tuesday
Recall that Otse was reportedly apprehended last week by EFCC operatives at a branch of Guaranty Trust Bank in Abuja.
According to the EFCC, his arrest was based on multiple petitions alleging financial misconduct. The Commission emphasized that despite being invited several times through known channels of communication, Otse failed to honour the invitations.
The EFCC clarified that although it is aware of Otse’s repeated verbal attacks on its operations, his arrest had nothing to do with those comments.
The statement read in part:
“Martins Innocent Otse was invited following numerous petitions alleging various forms of financial crime. His refusal to respond to multiple invitations left the Commission with no choice but to act.
While we acknowledge the suspect’s public criticism of the Commission, his arrest was not influenced by those remarks. Law enforcement agencies are fully empowered to investigate such matters if necessary.
Mr. Otse was taken into custody in accordance with the law, with a valid remand order secured. He has been granted administrative bail and will be released upon meeting the set conditions.”
The Commission concluded by urging the public to allow it carry out its duties without bias or interference, assuring that formal charges will be filed once investigations are complete
