Leadership, as aptly described by Frances Frei, is about empowering others through one's presence and ensuring that impact endures even in one's absence. This concept is particularly relevant in today's complex political landscape, where sensationalism often overshadows substance. It is crucial to set the record straight when misinformation is spread, especially when it concerns critical institutions that uphold the rule of law and maintain public order.
Recently, former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore referred to Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun as "illegal." This claim lacks factual basis and demonstrates either a misunderstanding or a deliberate distortion of Nigeria's constitutional processes. The appointment of IGP Egbetokun followed due process, as outlined in the 1999 Constitution and the Police Act 2020. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed him as Acting IGP in June 2023, and the Police Council confirmed him in line with established procedures.
Rather than speculating or spreading misinformation, it is essential to focus on constructive criticism and factual discourse. IGP Egbetokun's tenure has seen notable improvements in the Nigeria Police Force, including intelligence-led policing, professionalism, and human rights adherence. These efforts have contributed to a more effective and responsive police force, better equipped to address the dynamic security challenges facing Nigeria.
To strengthen democracy and security, engaging with facts and promoting respectful dialogue is vital. The office of the Inspector-General of Police is a constitutional institution that deserves respect and factual engagement. It is not a platform for political grandstanding or personal agendas. Nigeria benefits from informed discussions and constructive criticism, which can help build trust in institutions and promote national stability.
Let's strive for a higher standard of discourse, grounded in truth and respect for constitutional processes. By doing so, we can foster a more informed and engaged citizenry, capable of contributing to the development and progress of our nation. This approach will ultimately lead to a more stable and prosperous Nigeria, where institutions are respected, and the rule of law is upheld.
