The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO) of the Nigeria Police Force, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, has urged for a stronger partnership between the media and the police to enhance national security and restore public trust in law enforcement.

Hundeyin made this call during a courtesy visit to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Abuja, where he engaged journalists on the importance of constructive collaboration.

Media as Partners in Security.Highlighting the vital role of the media in shaping public perception, Hundeyin stressed that the job of a police spokesperson is challenging without the support of journalists. He encouraged media practitioners to embrace balanced, factual, and responsible reporting, warning that sensational or negative stories could undermine public confidence in the police.

“Insecurity in one part of the country can have ripple effects across the nation,” Hundeyin noted.

He clarified that his appeal was not an attempt to censor the press but to promote a healthy working relationship that strengthens peace, security, and social stability.CSP Hundeyin also assured journalists that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to protecting press freedom, pledging swift and fair responses to any complaints involving police officers in the course of journalists’ duties.

NUJ Welcomes Collaboration. In her response, Comrade Grace Ike, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, welcomed the visit and expressed the union’s readiness to collaborate with the police in advancing public interest.

She reaffirmed the NUJ’s commitment to defending journalists against harassment and intimidation, stating that:

“Press freedom is a right, not a privilege.”

Comrade Ike further pledged the NUJ’s support in building a productive media-police partnership that benefits society and improves communication between the public and law enforcement agencies.
