Community Uproar in Idimu After Alleged Same-Sex Encounter

Idimu, Lagos — March 3, 2024

A shocking incident unfolded in the Gloryland Estate community of Idimu, Lagos, after two men, identified as Jude Kolawole and Kriss Benson, were reportedly caught engaging in sexual activity at the Gloryland Hotel. The revelation sparked widespread outrage among residents, leading to a violent confrontation that has left the community in deep turmoil.

Witnesses allege that Kolawole and Benson were seen making out, an act that enraged many residents in the traditionally conservative neighborhood. What began as verbal condemnation quickly escalated into violence, as an angry mob surrounded the men, assaulting them and forcing them to walk naked around the estate in a humiliating display. Tragically, both men lost their lives during the course of the mob attack.

According to eyewitness accounts, during the assault, Kolawole allegedly mentioned the name of a local resident, Eric Otene, claiming that he and Otene were partners. This revelation further inflamed tensions, prompting the mob to storm Otene’s residence in search of him.

Upon reaching his home, the crowd vandalized his property and destroyed his vehicle while demanding his whereabouts. However, Otene was reportedly away on a two-week trip to Canada, leaving only his family members behind.

Otene’s father, Mr. Paul Otene, and his brother, Godfrey Otene, attempted to reason with the mob, explaining that Eric was out of the country. Despite their pleas, the crowd refused to listen. Fearing for their safety, Godfrey Otene rushed to the local police station to report the attack.

Before law enforcement could respond, the situation took a horrific turn. Members of the mob allegedly set Jude Kolawole and Kriss Benson on fire, killing them in an act of gruesome vigilante justice. Police and first responders arrived shortly afterward, but the victims had already succumbed to their injuries.

Law enforcement authorities have since launched a full investigation into the incident, vowing that all individuals involved in the violence will face prosecution. Officials reiterated that while Nigeria’s laws remain stringent against same-sex relationships—with penalties of up to 14 years imprisonment—mob justice is a criminal act that will not be tolerated.

As Idimu residents come to terms with the tragedy, local leaders and community advocates are calling for calm, reflection, and dialogue on issues of tolerance, human rights, and the rule of law. Many observers see the event as a painful reminder of the growing tension between traditional values and evolving social attitudes in modern Nigerian society.

The Gloryland Estate community remains tense as investigations continue, with many awaiting the return of Eric Otene and further developments from the authorities.
