The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has announced a series of enforcement measures aimed at tightening internal discipline and addressing emerging security concerns across the state. The directives were issued by the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare after a strategic meeting with senior officers at the Command Headquarters on Tuesday. CP Azare expressed alarm over increasing cases of police officers violating the Inspector-General of Police’s ban on escorting unauthorized VIPs. He ordered that any officer found accompanying private individuals or politicians without approval from Force Headquarters be arrested, disarmed, and subjected to orderly room trial. He cautioned that supervisory officers including Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) would be held liable for misconduct by their personnel.

Reaffirming the state government’s prohibition of masquerade activities, the Commissioner noted that such gatherings have recently led to violent confrontations and public disturbances. He directed all Area Commanders, DPOs, and Tactical Commanders to enforce the ban without compromise, warning that any form of negligence would attract sanctions.

The CP also condemned the spread of fake news and misinformation on social media, describing it as a growing threat to public peace. He instructed officers to intensify community policing efforts, monitor emerging risks, and ensure that individuals involved in fabricating or circulating false information face prosecution. Addressing broader crime trends including cultism, armed robbery, and street gang activities the Commissioner ordered Tactical Units and Divisional formations to conduct intelligence led raids, sustained surveillance on identified black spots, and professional stop-and-search operations. He emphasized that officers must carry out these duties without harassment of innocent residents. While reaffirming the Command’s commitment to sustaining Akwa Ibom’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful states, Azare urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly.

Meanwhile, the Command has confirmed the arrest of one David Effiong for allegedly parading in masquerade regalia and causing public disturbance. Police also announced the arrest of three individuals Lexis Christopher, Stephen Okwen, and 15-year-old student Favour Emenyi for alleged involvement in fabricating and circulating fake news. All suspects, according to the Command, are being processed for court. The announcement was contained in a statement signed by DSP Timfon John, Police Public Relations Officer for the Akwa Ibom State Command.
